Shires House Leeds This 3 storey office development provided us with a unique opportunity to implement many of the cutting edge philosophies that form the backbone of good environmental design, but also visionary new methods as yet un-used. For example: we are one of the first companies to use a geo-thermal heating and cooling system which penetrates 100 meters into the ground where it can utilise the constant temperature at this level. Heat exchangers will enable the under-floor heating/ cooling to operate more efficiently. Every kilowatt of energy used could potentially produce 3 kilowatts of heating/ cooling to the building throughout the year. Another natural renewable resource utilised is rainwater. This will be collected from the roof, stored underground and treated for reuse in toilet areas to reduce fresh water consumption. Both internal and external lighting will incorporate low energy, high efficiency lamps together with presence detectors and zoned switching. The whole building will be thermally insulated to the new Regulation levels and the design has provisionally been given a BREEAM rating of very good. The building will not rely on mechanical ventilation but will be naturally ventilated, which also gives personal control to individuals. The majority of the glazing is north-facing to improve both the quality of daylight and minimise solar heat gain. The small amount of south facing glazing will have external brise-soleil to provide sunshading. Shires House has been recognised by central government as exemplar and we have won this year the Green Apple Award for Best New Built Commercial Development.
